The most common NIE mistakes American expats make in Spain
From wrong forms to expired appointments — the NIE mistakes US movers keep repeating in Alicante, and how to avoid weeks of delay.

The NIE — Número de Identidad de Extranjero — is the foreign identity number every American mover needs in Spain. Without it you cannot open a long-term bank account, buy property, sign a utility contract or register for healthcare. It is also the single most fumbled step in a US-to-Alicante move.
Mistake one — using the wrong form. There are several EX forms; the right one depends on whether you're applying as an EU family member, as a non-resident, or as part of a residency application. Filing the wrong form means a wasted appointment.
Mistake two — turning up without proof of purpose. Spanish authorities will not issue a NIE 'just in case'. You need a documented economic, professional or social reason — a property purchase, a job offer, a residency application.
Mistake three — paying the wrong tax (Modelo 790-012). The fee must be paid in advance at a Spanish bank, with the right code and reference. Pay the wrong code and you queue up at the police station only to be sent home.
Mistake four — booking at the wrong office. NIE-only appointments and full residency appointments use different booking systems. American movers often book one when they need the other.
Mistake five — letting the appointment expire. Once issued, your appointment confirmation is short-lived. Reschedules in Alicante can run weeks behind.
We coordinate the right form, the right fee, the right office and the right appointment as part of our Settle in Alicante package — exactly because it is the step where DIY costs the most time.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a NIE at a Spanish consulate in the US?
Yes — Spanish consulates in the US can issue a NIE, but slots are limited and processing varies. Most American movers find it faster to apply in Alicante after arrival with a documented purpose.
How long does a Spanish NIE take to issue?
If your paperwork and fee are correct, the NIE is usually issued the same day at the appointment. Booking the appointment itself can take 2–6 weeks in Alicante.
