The most common NIE mistakes British expats make in Spain

The NIE — Número de Identidad de Extranjero — is the foreign identity number every British mover needs in Spain. Without it you can't open a long-term bank account, buy property, sign a utility contract or register for healthcare. And yet it is also the single most fumbled step in a UK-to-Alicante move.

Mistake one — using the wrong form. There are several EX forms and the right one depends on whether you're applying as an EU family member, as a non-resident or as part of a residency application. Filing the wrong form means the appointment is wasted.

Mistake two — turning up without proof of purpose. The Spanish authorities will not issue a NIE 'just in case'. You need a documented economic, professional or social reason — a property purchase, a job offer, a residency application.

Mistake three — paying the wrong tax (modelo 790-012). The fee must be paid in advance at a Spanish bank using the right code, with the right reference. Pay the wrong code and you queue up at the police station only to be sent home.

Mistake four — booking at the wrong office. NIE-only appointments and full residency appointments use different booking systems. UK movers often book one when they need the other.

Mistake five — letting the appointment expire. Once issued, your appointment confirmation is short-lived. Reschedules in Alicante can run weeks behind.
